I find message boards extremely useful for this sort of thing: you can't exactly Google "popularity of disabling middle distributor wire, serial killers, 1960s" or whatever and expect to find any worthwhile results. But the knowledge of how to do such a thing, how common would it have been? I remember reading an article about an episode in Berkeley right around that time of a man approaching two girls whose car was not working, and helping them push it, then offering a lift. Then another good Samaritan approached, offering to help, and the first was so upset by this that he walked off in a huff. It was later discovered that their middle distributor wire had been cut, a la Cheri Jo Bates. My question is: is this significant or not? The context is completely lost, some four decades later.
